My Erasmus: We touched the sky
Shared by: Frank Van Caeneghem
‘But what have you done there?’ ‘What have you experienced?’ ‘Do you have pictures?’ ‘Who is this, who is that, where is it…?’ Those were the questions people constantly fired at me once I was back. And most of the time, I answered with the same little words ‘good, Ireland, nature…’, which stood and still stands for ‘great, wonderful, would-do-it-again, WAW !!’ I find it extremely hard to talk about this period of my life with someone who has never experienced such a thing. Even people who have done it, but on another place & time don’t understand the feeling. Like most success formulas, it can’t be explained; you can only try to. You could compare it with a union between people with the same ideas, the same thoughts about education, school, leisure time… Erasmus Trip: Kortrijk LetterkennyIt was: 2005 I wouldn’t call it a new family, but everyone in that group is respected for who he or she is and that respect makes it special. The fact that everyone is searching for fun and a place in the group, gives it another dimension. You go, and in my case you go alone, to a country you have never visited before and 5 months later, you get back. But how…: new experiences, new look on the world, friends forever, a lot of international contacts, sleepovers in several different countries, a referee for your CV and many more… But let me introduce myself: my name is Frank Van Caeneghem and I study at Katho Hogeschool, Kortrijk – Belgium. When I heard about the Erasmus program, I was immediately interested, yet I wasn’t sure and it took a big effort for me to take the step. I eventually ended up in Letterkenny, Ireland, as the one and only representative from Belgium. During those 5 months, I shared a house with 2 Polish students and I studied at Letterkenny Institute of Technology, a huge and extremely modern university with lots of possibilities and challenges. Not only did they give us the possibility to join one (or more) club(s): football, golf, hill walking, canoeing, Christian Union…, they also gave us the possibility to explore the country and its attractive places, like Dublin, Galway, Glenveagh National Park… But students wouldn’t be students if they didn’t organise their own parties as well, with typical (and less typical) themes: Welcome party, Hawaii, Mafia, French party, Polish one, multicultural party (during which every country needed to be represented with some typical elements and food)… till at last … : the ‘not-goodbye-but-see-you-again-party’. As all the others students who have written their experiences as well, I can’t add anything more; that’s why I’ll just repeat the same: great experience and if you ever have the possibility: don’t think, just go for it !!!
