About the Project

In the year 2007, the Erasmus Programme will be 20 years old. This programme led Europe into its new stage: the age of a mobile society with students improving their skills during their studies at universities abroad, becoming culturally competent and tolerant. These future workers are also willing to support the development abroad. By celebration of 20 Years of Erasmus Programme, ESN wants to show the importance of the academic mobility to all the European citizens and demonstrate how by meeting other cultures we can create a better Europe for the future.

The main aims of the project

  1. To promote Erasmus and exchange to local students and to encourage more students to go abroad and to promote ESN
  2. To make the European citizens understand the importance of mobility and of the Erasmus scheme
  3. To gather comments on the Erasmus Programme from exchange students in order to design better exchanges in the future and to pass the comments to the stakeholders.
The project consists of three parts:
  1. The Opening Conference of the 20 Years of Erasmus Programme "Enhanced Erasmus Programme for a Stronger Europe" in Brussels , 18 January 2007
  2. Erasmus Days around Europe
  3. A conference organised by the European Commission in Lisbon , October 2007

Additionally, this page is designed to gather the experiences of Erasmus students from all over Europe . By the descriptions, photos, movies they uploaded, we want to express the meaning of Erasmus and this way encourage more students to take this opportunity to taste, smell, discover, try and learn.

About the organiser

Erasmus Student Network (ESN) is a student organisation founded in Kopenhagen in 1990 for supporting and developing student exchange. We are present in 230 Higher Education Institutions from 30 countries. The mission of ESN is to foster student mobility in Higher Education under the principle of Students Helping Students.

The website of ESN is www.esn.org

Also the birth of Erasmus Student Network is linked to the idea of Erasmus. The idea to create a network that will assist students when abroad was in fact born during the first Erasmus evaluation meeting. The first generation of Erasmus felt the need to support future Erasmus students and therefore created a network of organisations to put in practice the motto of students helping students. From the group of 32 students, ESN grew to become the widest network engaged in fostering student mobility with 10,000 active volunteers in 29 countries.
